When my daughter said “you should definitely give it a try,” I was so skeptical. Not because I do not believe in alternate medicines but ‘cos I do not know anything about it. I am so very used to visiting my allopathy doctors as and when my body needs. For Joint pain-ortho; for diabetes- our family doctor; for nerves- my neurologist (in fact, I underwent a spinal cord surgery few years back for my lower back pain). But I had a long history of knee pain since my active sports years (1995 onwards) and I was taking different treatments at different stages as per ortho’s advice. Added to knee pain came the heel pain for the past few years. These two totally curtailed my physical activities.
My diabetes doctor every time after seeing the blood test results advice for a half an hour walk at least every day, it looked a herculean task for me. When I told him about the pain, he said “you have to break the chain; you need to exercise regularly if you want to maintain the sugar level; don’t live on medicines alone.” How to break the chain? When one such opportunity knocked the door, I eagerly grabbed it with a blind faith that I can manage. That opportunity: my badminton mixed doubles partner with whom I played for a club in Velachery 25 years back asked me to assist him in coaching kids in a newly constructed stadium in Velachery. It was pain, pain and pain in the knee and nothing else in the beginning of coaching days. My feet swelled up and no way I can reduce that. But was determined to face it and find a solution as per my family doctor’s advice. I tried so many things-medications, physio, oil massages, sprays, band etc. Nothing gave me the needed relief. All gave me temporary relief only. The many tests starting with blood, proceeding with CT scan, MRI and many others revealed my knee condition is normal for my age. I tried to convince myself to live with pain without complaining and in this stage my daughter suggested that I should meet Dr Rekha, an acupuncturist in Indira Nagar, Adyar. I was puzzled but I agreed ‘cos she is not someone who will recommend something without confirming the live results.
So, we both went to meet Dr Rekha and after a brief introduction, she tested me using a thin ball headed metal rod on my left hand (palm mostly) and registered my pain response to the points. To my surprise she was asking me relevant questions about my health history that I myself forgot. For example, UTI (urinary tract infection). I was suffering with that for many years since 1998 but of late thought I am cured of it. But the therapist said we need to treat this ‘cos this is my main issue. Another example is when Dr Rekha asked me about my gastroenteritis problem that did not come to my mind at all. In fact, I was taking Rabeprazole Tablet on a daily basis but never imagined this could also be the reason for my pain. She then saw my reports, CT scans, and what she said next shocked me “your knees are normal. The pain you experience is a result of so many other issues and if we start addressing them one by one you will have pain free knees and heels.” Never imagined this kind of diagnosis and decided I should try her treatment.
I am tired of various treatments and if this one can solve the problem why not? What all I should bear is the pricking pain of the needles, right? So started visiting her daily for therapy and after 20 sessions, I thought it is time I talk about the effects of the acupuncture therapy I underwent so that it will be useful for others also.
The results after 20 sessions: swelling on my feet gone; no gastric issues - I stopped taking Rabeprazole Tablet since day 1 of the therapy as per Dr Rekha’s advice. No issues of UTI. My stony legs became soft and I could feel the pinching on my toes. They were numb and hard earlier. Right from Day 1, Dr Rekha not only treated me using the needles but changed my diet completely. Reducing my usual high carbs intake, her advice involved easy preparation of food at home that include dal, pulses, veggies, eggs, chicken, mutton, and seasonal fruits. Though I struggle to follow the diet chart she gave, I am sure if I strictly adhere to the routine, it will make a lot of difference to my health. The momentary pricking pain of the needles is nothing compared to the pain I was experiencing for many, many years. Of course, few Varma sessions are pain bearing sessions when they were performed, but a great relief from pain after that.
After 25 sessions she taught me some exercises for the knees and heels. They were simple and highly useful to maintain the condition of my acupuncture treated knees and heels. I completed 30 sessions and after a break for 5 days I noticed the following changes:

- I no longer use pillow for my knees while sleeping; I can simply stretch my legs and sleep; the sudden pull in the calf and rear thigh muscles when I stretch my legs during sleep is gone.
- I stopped taking Rabeprazole tablet for nearly 35 days as I have no gastric issues.
- I can feel the feet pressure now while walking/playing. Earlier they were numb and stony like. After taking up badminton coaching as my career, I spend more than 4 hours in badminton court teaching young kids and I can feel a whole lot of improvement in my foot work.
